I stared ahead at the enormous opening in the side of a limestone foothill. Suddenly, the temperature cooled down. The cave stood there, mysterious and intimidating. Vines hung around its extremity like serpents ready to choke anything that came close. Jagged, dangling, craggy rock ‘icicles’ hung haphazardly from the limestone rooftop, threatening to obliterate anyone entering its passageway without hunching over. Old, dried-up tree roots sprung from the ground like omens. But water, clean and clear, streamed out of the limestone floor and ran through the cave to the other side, where I was once told that it flowed down to the sea. And then, there they were. Those big, ugly black bats that once had me retreating and bolting during an adventurous childhood spree.
